Girl's College Bedroom on a Budget

Two weeks ago I shared Claire's bedside table makeover with promise to share the rest of her bedroom soon. If you don't have college age children, you may not realize the big jump from a dorm room to a house. Thankfully the house was furnished with the exception of her bedroom.

I think I have mentioned before that our daughter attends college in California, so the distance presents a challenge when it comes to "stuff". I have found the most cost effective option is to order online, especially when you get free shipping. The Instagram pictures below represent the look she was going for. My first thought was, "How am I supposed to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"?? While this room is beautiful, I had seen pictures of her future room, and we were on a budget.

As it is with all decorating jobs, I started with the list of necessities, knowing we could slowly add extras as the budget allowed.

Mom's list of Necessities:

• Queen Bed

• new bedding ( bigger bed means new bedding)

• bedside table

• desk

• chair

• dresser

After shopping several internet sites, reading countless reviews, and being mindful of our budget, I ended up making the following purchases.

I chose this mattress from Walmart.com. It is Oliver

Smith Organic Euro Top 8". The queen was

$160.99. It came in a box, a first for me, but it rolled

out and fluffed up just as it was supposed to. My

daughter gives it 5 stars!!

   The following items came from Wayfair.com

Althea Queen Headboard by Andover Mills was $86.99

Queen Hulme White Metal Platform Bed by Latitude Run was $154.99 and easy to assemble

Queen Alwyn Home 2" Polyester Mattress Topper was $39.99

Queen Puredown 300 count 100% cotton Sheet Set in White was $38.14

Dayne Desk by Willa Arlo Interiors $193.99 (a splurge)

We actually bought a similar chair to the one above from the local Ross for $59.99

We found the lamps on Redland's Marketplace for $15. Claire wasn't sure she liked the brown shades, but they compliment the Antelope Fabric nicely as well as the brown carpet. I made the antelope and pink gauze pillows with fabric from Hobby Lobby. The Shams are Better Homes & Gardens Raw Edge Ruffle Euro Sham, $14.84 each @ Walmart.com

The Hannalill Curtains in pink from Ikea.com. were $24.99. I found the Peacock Alley white Queen duvet and shams at Tuesday Morning for $12.00. The pink blanket, quilt throw pillow and bedside accessories were all left over from the dorm room.

The wall decor as well as the desk lamp also dorm room leftovers.

This framed scarf is quite large and hangs on the opposite wall from her desk. It too is a dorm room leftover. It's a great way to create a big piece of wall art for not much money. The scarf was a gift from an old boyfriend about 30 years ago.

She opted for this rather than a dresser, which saved money

and also wall space.
