One Room Challenge: Week 4 Kitchen Makeover

The good news is in the past week, we did get all of the cabinets, walls, ceiling, and trim painted. The bad news is that our weather has been crummy, so photographing the progress has been a real challenge, so please bear with me, and let's hope for lots of sunshine in week six so I can capture some fabulous photos. Anywho, enough about photography, let's get to the progress!!
Here is a picture of what the white cabinets looked like before.
We removed all the hardware, sanded, cleaned, and then painted the cabinets and drawers with Benjamin Moore Advance Interior Paint in Collingwood (semi-gloss finish). We applied three coats, allowing a day for drying between each coat. Luckily the weather was nice LAST week, so we were able to take the drawers outside to sand and paint.
We did not paint the inside of the cabinets because they were repainted last year and the inside will no longer be visible on the upper cabinets as I am making curtains for them. On the housekeeping front, when I removed the drawers, I reorganized and got rid of utensils that I no longer use, vacuumed the insides real well, and put fresh liners in. Everything is looking and feeling so much cleaner!!!
Along the same lines, before we painted the ceiling, we removed all the can lights and soaked them overnight in a solution of bleach and dish detergent. I was amazed at how dirty and discolored they were.
Because the wallpaper was still in good condition and was attached really well to the wall, we decided not to remove it and just paint over it. On the advice of a friend, I first prepped the wallpapered areas with two coats of Zinsser Primer.
In a last-minute decision, I decided to paint the trim, walls, ceiling, and tile all one color, Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore. This is a paint trick that draws the eye up, which creates the illusion of a larger room and a higher ceiling. With a roller, we applied 3 coats of paint to the walls, and two coats to the ceiling. With an angled brush, we applied two coats of paint to the trim. Last year I primed the tile backsplash in hopes of painting it but never did, so I painted one coat of the Swiss coffee on the tile. It is a subtle difference, but noticeable to me. Again, the pictures are not great and don't do the colors justice.
One request of my husband was to relocate the coffeemaker to this counter. It had been in the alcove next to the cooktop before, and it was just too congested. We have both loved having it underneath the new shelves. I love it when a design plan is both pretty and functional.
